The to avoid loss of active compounds.
The fresh leaves of Moringa oleifera were harvested, washed and dried for seven days under shed, at room temperature, to avoid loss of active compounds. The dried leaves were ground to powder using a hand milling machine at the National Centre for Energy Research Development, University of Nigeria and weighed with a Mettler balance. The powdered sample was then stored in an air-tight bottle for further use.
18.104.22.168 EXTRACTION PROCESS
Aqueous extract: The extraction process used was hot-water method (decoction). Fifty grams of the powdered sample were soaked in 500 ml of distilled water and boiled for about ten minutes. After boiling, the sample was double-filtered using cheese cloth and collected in a conical flask and allowed to cool. The filtrate was dried in hot-air oven at temperature of 700C. Ethanolic extract: Fifty grams of the powdered sample were soaked in 500 ml of absolute ethanol and allowed to stand for 24 hours. The mixture was stirred occasionally. After 24 hours, the sample was double filtered using cheese cloth and collected in a conical flask. The filtrate was dried in hot-air oven at temperature of 450C.
Moringa, it’s referred to as the “miracle tree” because of its wide range of nutritional, medicinal, and purifying properties. It’s also called a “superfood” because of its awesome potential to improve health and eliminate hunger around the world. It has high amounts of protein, and is significant source of vitamins and minerals. The leaves of the moringa tree contain 18 amino acids, 8 of which are essential amino acids, making them a “complete” protein.
3.4 PROCESSING THE MORINGA LEAVES INTO MORINGA POWDER
3.4.1 STEP 1: CUTTING YOUR MORINGA TREE DOWN TO SIZE
When your moringa tree has gotten nice and tall and has a significant number of branches, cut the main trunk of your moringa tree down to about 1 meter high.
