The battle of Iwo jima was a battle that happened between the US and Japan. It occured on an island called Iwo Jima. And the US and Japan Fought for the island. The nations involved in the war were United States of America and Japan. Because all civilians had been evacuated, there were no civilian casualties at Iwo Jima, unlike at Saipan and Okinawa. American military casualties included 5,900 dead and 17,400 wounded.Japanese losses, 17,845–18,375 dead and missing, 216 taken prisoner ~3,000 in hiding. In 1945 the United States invaded the island of Iwo Jima in hopes of clearing out the presence of the Japanese Imperial Army and recapturing three airfields. These airfields provided support for assaulting further islands under Japanese control and was close enough to the Japanese mainland for American bombers to effectively bomb Japanese cities. Iwo Jima was an exellent place, as it gave the US an advantage in the war. As It  was only 600miles away from japan.Chester William Nimitz was a fleet admiral of the United States Navy. He played an immense role in the naval history of World War II with the role of Commander in Chief, U.S Pacific Fleet and the Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, ordering Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. He was also the leading U.S Navy authority on submarines. Certified in submarines from previous training, he eventually supervised the conversion of vessel’s propulsion from gasoline to diesel Later on, he was essential in gaining approval to create the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus. Nimitz played a significant role in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He joined the battle since he was the Admiral and had to complete his role and duty. On October 3, 1944 the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) commanded Admiral Chester W. Nimitz in, Commander in Chief Pacific, to get ready for the conquering of Iwo Jima early in the upcoming year. The JCS orders contained a clause which was that Nimitz must supply covering and support forces for General MacArthur’s liberation of Luzon. The Japanese defence was tougher than expected which meant the invasion was delayed a month. General Kuribayashi took advantage of this time and made the Japanese Army more prepared for invasions. There were various assaults on Iwo Jima. On March 16, Schmidt declared the island secure. Kuribayashi and his chief of staff died in the end, in a final charge or by committing suicide.
