Social media has grown over the years and changed the ways of people thinking in which the internet is experienced by most of the users. Social media is built on the idea of how people know and interact with each other. It gives people the power to share, make the world more open and interrelated.

1.1     Point of 1st Proposition

The Prime Minister as a first party agree with an argument related to ‘Teacher Should  Not Be Allowed To Interact With Student Via Social Media’  by stating that social media interactions can accidentally cross the teacher’s professional boundaries. For example, Facebook is about connecting with friends. Teachers cannot be friends with their students on Facebook, they need to maintain a level of professional respect. Although students are a teenager, they find it difficult to make a difference between professional relationships and relationships with friends. Teachers also need a personal life for themselves.

While the use of social media as a teaching tool is very popular throughout this country. However, there are some teachers who use social media in wrong ways such as sexual assault or pornography for underage students. Teachers need to empower face-to-face learning, According to Scott D. Johnson, “and it is evident that face to face learning is very effective, students can learn more quickly and never forget what they learn from this kind of education. While pupils cannot control others to post anything they like on social media, but the government will come out with the policy that teacher should be banned from contacting their students in social media.

1.2      Point of 1st Opposition

The first opposition team does not agree with this statement. According to opposition view, education not only occurs in schools but also outside the schools’ area. Everyone can learn and gain knowledge at any age, surroundings and time. Social media refers to the instruments of effective communication. Social media is a series of websites and apps designed to enable people to share content in quick ways, efficiently and in real-time. Social media gives a good input to the relationship between teacher and student.

According to (Subrahmanyam and Smahel, 2010), social networking sites play an important role in people’s lives as they provide space for people to communicate, everyone can share information through social media. It also allows others to work together and build a community. In this era of globalization, the learning process is not in the classroom only, there are various ways to get knowledge, such as through social media. Students can learn through what they see and hear. This is one of the informal lessons. The learning takes place not in formal ways, but the value required throughout this process. For example, teachers who always update the good status on Instagram or Facebook indirectly motivates readers that read those sentences in social media. Teachers can also spread news and awareness on current issues that occur in education so that people or learners will know about it. Teachers are models for students. Teachers should be a good example for their students because they hold the noble status as teachers. They are also bound by the rules and regulations that have been provided by the government.

The opposition does not see any problems if students interact with teachers through social media. The social media is just communication media. According to Dato ‘Sri Alias bin Haji Ahmad Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, the education sector needs a new technology approach because the current teaching and learning process is not limited to schools. The concept of information in our fingertips, which enables learning to occur anywhere and anytime. Social media has become an effective way if we use in the right ways.

The social media users need to ensure that everything reported and shared on social sites has a positive impact and does not affect the reputation of any party. Therefore, dissemination and sharing of information on social media which often occur immediately and openly should be done according to guidelines or procedures. Information dissemination through social media can help teachers and students in obtaining useful updates. Teachers and students should also have a sense of responsibility using social media in official or personal matters.

1.3      Point of 2nd Proposition

From the second proposition team, they will argue about every school should have a policy for the use of social media on how teachers should and should not interact with students through social media. In last October, a teacher in Pennsylvania confesses guilty by sending a message to a student and ask for the naked picture. The social media weakness is proven by various scandals over the past year. It is better for teachers to think about creating separate accounts for personal and professional use. This can make easier lines for teachers. In addition, teachers should also know about how social media is used in the classroom. Parents can see how communication is going between teachers and students. Furthermore, there are other social networks that can be used by students and teachers without interacting with each other. Edmodo is one of the social media that can provide knowledge and information about teaching in a good way. Students can get the knowledge and information more easily and quickly with a simple method. Teachers can provide information about test or homework assignments through Edmodo.

1.4      Point of 2nd Opposition

The second opposition says that it is just a matter of discipline. First, never post on social media during working hours, secondly, never use workstations like school computers, and third, do not post anything about students. As teachers, we have the right to speak, as long it does not prevent the ability to perform a task at schools. School social media policies are guidelines on what to do and don’t between teachers and students. As long as teachers recognize their boundaries with students and take care of their personalities, problems will not occur. Interactions between teachers and students can be purchased positive effects outside the classroom. For example, teachers can create Facebook groups with students, where teachers can post assignments, make announcements, and remind students important deadlines. Parents can also access the site to monitor what’s going on between teachers and students. I believe that social media can benefit beyond the classroom, which gives students the opportunity to seek additional help and receive further classroom information from teachers.

This technology changes education and students become familiar with technology from a young age, and now change how students learn and participate in social media. In this technology, social media has gained credibility over the years as a trusted source of information and platforms where teachers can interact with students outside the classroom. The use of social media in education provides students with the ability to get more useful information directly from the teacher, to connect with other learning groups and educational systems that make education become easier.

In addition, it also helps students and teachers with various opportunities to enhance learning methods that enable sharing and interaction. There is the valuable knowledge that can be gained through social media such as analysis and views on various topics or issues for learning purposes. Social media is also a medium where students can communicate information over long distances. Social media between teachers and students has changed the way that knowledge is delivered to students.

Students and teachers can use social media in helping them centralized collective knowledge of the whole class by making learning and communication more effective for everyone. Starting collaborative learning networks using Whatsapp, and other social media can save their time and effort. Social media is no longer an obstacle to learning, it can help students and teachers make and manage research collaboration efficiently. Social media interaction also providing teachers and students learning in easy and interesting ways to communicate. A student who has a question about their homework may get a quick response by sending a message to their teachers.

1.5      Point of 3rd Proposition

For the third proposition team, some educators are worried that this social media is created to make students uncomfortable for themselves, students losing valuable of learning in real life social skills. Students may find themselves in disadvantage ways when admitting to college or during job interviews when they need to communicate in front of other people. They need to have interaction with others or by face to face communication.

Actually, students who engage in activities on social media sites while learning resulting reduction of their focus. This leads to a reduction in their academic performance and a focus on learning. Student’s motivation level is reduced due to the use of this social site. They rely on virtual environments instead of acquiring practical knowledge from the real world. Additionally, students receive low grades in schools because of lack of information and writing skills. Social networking sites provide a way for students and teachers to interact, they can be a sharp weapon for those who are malicious. In a study of cyberbullying in Indiana State University, researchers Christine Macdonald and Bridget Roberts-Pittman found that nearly 22 percent of college students admitted being harassed online. Of this group, 25 percent reported that they were bullied through social networking sites. Teachers that using social media as part of their course activities should know the dangers of using social media. “With the intervention of a minor behavior, we can stop the negative behavior getting worse,” said Macdonald.

1.6      Point of 3rd Opposition

From the third opposition state that we will communicate with someone through social media. For a clear and obvious example, we send a message through “WhatsApp” app as an intermediary between the employee and its employer, and teachers and students also use this app in the 21st century. This is because some teachers will inform the assignment that students need to take before the learning session starts. We really need social media for communication. We have a government policy to follow. Therefore, as a teacher, they cannot engage in romantic or sexual relationships with students. If the teacher violated the rules, the teacher would be punished under the Act of TATASUSILA PERGURUAN MALAYSIA (1998). In this act, conduct TATASUSILA PERGURUAN MALAYSIA (1998) says that all teachers in this country are bound by the Malaysian Institute of Professional Ethics, which can result in disciplinary action, including dismissal, if they break the rules that already prescribed in it.  Each school must have a social media policy that outlines how teachers should and should not interact with students via social media. Letter of the Ministry of Education in values and ethical guidelines on the use of social media for teachers and students were issued on June 23, 2017.

1.7      Opinion from Non-Debaters

In my opinion as a listener to debaters, I agree with the fact that teachers should not be allowed to interact with the student via social media which is from proposition view. This is because it does not lead to good things. It brings a lot of bad things to the students. Students need to send official e-mails. They have business relationships with their teachers. Social networking with teachers is likely to lead to an inappropriate relationship with a student and teacher. Communication through this social media can be beyond the limits of teacher and student relationships. As a teacher, professionalism should be threatened well.

Through this social media communication, it is also against the school policy. My opinion is the only site that students and teachers should interact is the school area only. There are too many conflicts between teachers and students that can cause problems and things that are beyond our expectation. It needs to be discontinued between teacher and student communication through this unofficial website.

Teachers need their own personal lives and take care of their own business and not be around the student all times. Also, sometimes through social media texts between teachers and students will result in the transmission of nasty texts and pictures that are not related to learning. Students should not know everything about their teachers’ personal life. The only suitable method used to communicate with students is the school email or predetermined website, which allows schools to monitor what they send behind and so on.

Teachers can give unfair information about test or homework assignments through social media. In addition to this mistake, students who are unable to access the internet or who do not have a phone cannot receive any information from the teacher through online apps. Other than that, if teachers sent a deadline for a new project through online and that student could not see, they will fail in the assessment. This is the reason why I believe that teachers and students cannot chat verbally in social media.

Social media has interrupted students writing skills. Students no longer know how to write long essays as they are not read novels and storybooks that can educate their writing. The internet is full of short stories and writes with many abbreviations and students that read all of this will not have the actual skills that required to write. In addition, due to the nature of the message that was written by students, they have planted the habit of writing with a brief word, incomplete sentences, and this has affected the grammar skills, punctuation, communication and writing skills. This action affects most of them in class and during exams and tests. Abbreviations and incomplete sentences lead to failure. For example ‘cs / cz / bcos’ is not ‘because’. Some students even forget how to spell correctly because of the usage of the abbreviated word in everyday life.

Additionally, students are no longer pay attention to details and research because they know they can always check on what they need by online. By doing this, the use of libraries and research institutions has been reduced. Retentive memory is no longer used. They know the necessary information can be browsed easily. If they are asked any questions, they will bring the phone out to find the answers on the website. Students are exposed to immorally values (read articles about vices on social sites) and dirty websites such as pornography. Students like to practice what they see, they tend to practice what they see and read on the internet. They are involved in all of these things by affecting their education.

The more students spend time on social networking sites, the less time they spend on their own. This will cause lack of body signals and other nonverbal signals, such as tone, inflection, and face-to-face communication. Students who spend a lot of time in social networking do not communicate effectively with people. Students will have a hard time to communicate face-to-face with people and lose their skills, as they spend more time talking from the back of the screen.

1.8      Conclusion

If viewed from the whole aspects, it is found that there are many negative aspects opposed to positively that obtained by students and teachers. As a teacher, they need to be careful about the use of this social media in order not to violate the ethics as a teacher. For students, they should be wise in dividing time between lessons and surfing the internet. They should also be reminded that not breaking the limit as a student. They need to know the limits of interaction between teachers and students.
