Addressing both the present and future needs was the clarion call. Government of Maharashtra  through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has planned a 146 kilometre long rail based Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) for Mumbai to be built under multiple phases.

The project was implemented under the BOOT method i.e. Built, Own, Operate and Transfer and is India’s first Public Private Partnership metro project in which the phases of construction, operation and maintenance were given to private players.

This project is the first corridor of the proposed MRTS. The “Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar” line shall be an elevated line with a route length of 11 kms, with 12 stations and a car depot situated at D.N. Nagar.

The existing sub-urban trains connect the northern and southern parts of the city. This project will provide East-West rail based connectivity to Central and Western suburbs. The project will bring down the travel time from Andheri to Ghatkopar down to 21 minutes by means of the Metro against the 90 minutes it took by other means of transport.

Mumbai Transport Infrastructure- Loopholes

Rail Network

Failed to keep pace with demand

While the suburban rail traffic increased by almost 6 times, the capacity increased by only 2.3 times

Strong mismatch in Demand & Supply: Trains capable of carrying 1700-1800 passengers are handling between 4000-5000 passengers on a daily basis.

Bus Network

Constraints to expand the existing roadways in the city to meet the future demands

Number of cars in Mumbai has grown by 51% in the last 6 yrs, which has led to road congestion and the city being tagged as one of the most polluted cities in the world
