Food
processing industry in Kurdistan:

The
population of of Kurdistan is 5 million and 472 thousand and 436 citizens, and
it is projected that the total will reach by 2020 by six million and 171
thousand people, and with the rapid
increase of population growth, the rapid need for food and agricultural
increases directly.

90% of the food in the Kurdistan
Region is imported from Turki ,The region was once the bread basket of Iraq, well-known
for its high quality wheat. Turkey which is Kurdistan’s strongest trade partner
and Iran is followed, about $7 billion worth of goods into Kurdistan region
were imprted between (2004-2016) the Kurdistan Region, the majority of  it was food.

The
region only produces fifth of its red meat and a quarter of its poultry and
even then the food is imported, while it does not export any of its products to
other countries

Problem
of the study:

The
Kurdistan Region has total the essentials needed to become self-supporting
region. It has the power, capability, land and temperature requested to produce
food products, but the problem is the shortage of the budget committed to the Kurdistan
Region Government and the continuing economic crisis has desiccated any optimism
for funding to come from the government that can help farmers or investors to
produce food productions. It lacks of the planning and encouragement from the
government.

With
the right planning and management Kurdistan can easily become self-sufficient
and establish a solid food security if it assigns a better financial plan for
the food sector and even make it a major contributor to the economy.

Aim
of the study:

This
study is aimed to purpose ideas and suggestions about food processing to
contribute in providing job opportunities and contribute in economic stability
for a successful, diversified, and robust economy in Kurdistan region.

Main
body:

Rule
of planning in Food process and industry:

Planning detects that access to
healthy, sustainable and justifiable food is a vital part of succeeding livable
communities, it tries to address the conflicts between public health, planning
and economic, and environmental sustainability, and make sure that the
environment is suitable for people to meet their needs. Planning seek and
address factors that have either trends or opportunities that could create
places for people, so they can have accessibility to a healthy and viable food
in environments. Planning and planners address the approaches, alternatives and
interventions that are essential to transorml to a more sustainable and sufficient
food system and ensure people can meet their food needs into the future that
support people and economic sustainability.

Planners
as advocates:

Planners will not only improve the livability of our cities,
they work as advocates and assertion, they offer practical samples of what
could and should be done to make our region more food productive, healthier, more
just and more equitable places to live. they try to fill a gap which exists
between the current system of our region and the need for better and more
sustainable food systems. They make sure it sufficiently is produced,
protected, transported, processed, marketed, accessed, regulated, consumed and
wasted, they try to contribute it to the growth of economy and providing jobs.

Planners try to satisfy the
audience needs equally, whether they are governments, higher authorities, policy
makers, or community members in every levels or even elected representatives.

Planning
and politics conflict:

Planners
are usually advised or advocated on the sequences that will eventually to be
decided by a wider elected representative or wider authorities. In the end
these elected representatives are responsible for the final decisions, planners
must response their voters decisions. Even id the the voters do not encourage on
the need for food planning, there may not be the political will to pursue it
through their final decisions, regardless of what planners advise. This is
especially the case when the opportunity cost is felt or has an immediate
effect the planned area.

Result & Discussion

Food security is like national
security, it has an impact on most of the sectors of the region (Economy,
health , social, employment environmental, etc. ) Development of the food
industry sector is vital to the

Region’s growth and development, and
can placed a high priority on creating an environment that attracts local and
foreign investment and where businesses can thrive

despite the obstacles that obstruct
the development of food production which include technical, environmental,
social, political, and economic in Kurdistan, our Region has a moderate climate
and, if managed properly, water resources, and an abundance of agricultural
land that can, once did, and will support a thriving agricultural sector. We
can once again be both a major food and agricultural producer and exporter of
wheat, vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy, and poultry in the wider region and
beyond. Much of our agriculture has reemerged. We produce tomatoes, eggplant,
cucumbers, onions, watermelon, peppers, and many other fruits and vegetables.
We herd cattle and sheep and keep flocks of chickens. Our wild honey and Hawler
yogurt are well-known for their special flavor.

We
have further opportunities for growing food industry that may help provide a large
amount of job opportunities for the population of Kurdistan region and develop
export potentiality and taking advantage of these ingredients with the help of
local government by giving loans and finance and establishment of work programs
will not only benefit the stakeholders but the region within all economic
sector as a whole.

The
basic benefits of a proper food processing includes:

Ø  Confirms food security and wellbeing.

Ø  Enables economic developments & employment.

Ø  Develops efficiency through value chain by benefiting farmers,
processors and consumers.

Ø  Reduces unemployment and poverty.

Ø  Enhances export competitive.

Ø  Increases food loss prevention and protection.

Ø  Offers long shelf-life for consumers.

Ø  Creates self-independent region.

Ø  Improve productivity, quality, profitability and customer loyalty.

Recommendation

1.
Land
ownership. There are land ownership matters that must be determined to support
the creation of large farms for wider sufficient productivities.

2.
Policy
Priorities: policy priorities and government should support and struggles to recover
and grow agriculture and animal products to improve their food productivity, focusing
on the following policy priorities:

Ø  Improving the skills of our farmers by training courses.

Ø  Improving the investment environment for agriculture and animal
industry.

Ø  Actions for opening, running, and closing a business.

Ø  Implement legal reforms to allow larger farms that can benefit
better from technology and diversify production

Ø  Emerging the export potential.

Ø  Advancing greater openness to the international economy.

Ø  Promoting privatization and strengthening private sector
participation for a better economy.

3.
Effective
and Honest Government

Our Government must focus on those tasks that the Government can
only do by providing law and order, establishing and implementing reasonable
and necessary laws and regulations, working with development organizations and
experts from around the world to improve the way people work. It must advance government’s
honesty, transparency, proficiency and corruption-freeness, and accomplish all
its responsibilities fairly and efficiently to offer more successful investments

4.
Establishment
of special zones for the food industry: In order to attract more investments,
the development of full-service industrial parks, which can serve as special
economic development zones, should be pursued with the completion of high
levels of services, including the Internet, banking and business-friendly
regulations . New areas for the development of food industries should be
established in villages where most farms (agricultural land and animal farms)
are available. Should re-focus on the temptation of people to employ and train
local workers, connect with local firms, attract industries that help regional
and global markets

5.
Fair
accessibility to healthy food where people live and work is important to accomplishing
and maintaining health and sustainability, and reducing transport costs.

6.
Kurdistan
has paid 7 billion dollars for importing fruits and vegetables from Turki and
Iran. While it should have been exporting worth of 7 billion dollars. Mismanagement
and corruption is determining institutions and economy. Its time to do
something about our own situation and build a trustworthy and independent
Kurdistan at all levels.

Conclusion

Food industry
development is essential for security for the people of the Kurdistan Region,
economic affluence for farmers, and prosperity through the export of our
agricultural and food products.

Kurdistan once
was the basket of Iraq where all of Iraq was living on its products ( Wheat,
meat vegetables and fruits, etc). but since 1980s the regime was demolished by
Saddam Hussein cleared more than 4,000 villages to suppress dissent in the
restive rural region, where thousands of farms were destroyed and until now the
unstable condition of the region and shortage of government budget that are
huge obstacles of developing food industry and investments to improve the
economic situation of Kurdistan. Instead of producing and exporting Kurdistan
spend more than 7 billion dollars on importing goods and vegetables from Turki
and Iran in one decade. 90% of goods and vegetables are imported from Iran and
Turki, and the other 10% is produced in farms and is being sold to markets and
groceries.

Our government within
integration of planning should put the people of Kurdistan principal in their
actions and policies. they should  provide
program for improving the lives of our people includes a coordinated set of
policies that will elevate the quality of life in the Kurdistan Region.
