Windows 10 Updates stuck download

Unfortunately this can happen. Your Windows OS alerts you that you have an update, your computer starts downloading it and then it just gets stuck at a random percentage (could be 0%, 10% or even 99%). If you try to download the update again you will notice, that even after a couple of hours,  it is stuck on that particular figure.

This issue is present in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

How to solve this problem? Just follow these steps and your updates will work.

First of all you need to open Command Prompt as an admin. To run Command Prompt as an admin in Windows 10, just press Windows Key + X.

Once Command Prompt is open, type the following one after the other and hit the Enter Key:

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

Once the above commands are entered, any Windows Update related Services are stopped.

The next step is to browse to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete everything inside it. Simply select everything with Ctrl + A and press Delete.

If you are unable to delete some files it is because they are in use. All you need to do is to restart your computer and start over. Once the computer is restarted you will be able to delete all the files inside the Software Distribution folder.

After deleting the contents of the Software Distribution folder, restart your computer.

Once your system has rebooted run Command Prompt as an admin and type the following commands and press Enter:

net start wuauserv

net start bits

These commands will restart the Windows Update related Services.

Run Windows Update again and you will be able to download and install the updates successfully this time. After the updates are installed, even though a restart will be scheduled, we recommend that you restart your computer to complete the process.

If this doesn’t help, then the solution for you is to download the Windows 10 ISO and reinstall it.

How to stop Windows 10 from upgrading your computer automatically?

Well, even though Microsoft is saying that they do not force any Windows user to upgrade to Windows 10, there are some reports of Windows 7 being upgraded to Windows 10 by force. Other reports say that Microsoft offers Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 only two options: upgrade to Windows 10 “now” or “tonight”.

Although Windows 10 is a good and free upgrade, some users may not want it and would rather keep using either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

If you find yourself in this position, there are some ways of blocking the upgrade to Windows 10.

Here are a few ways of blocking the upgrade, depending on which stage you are now:

  1. System administrators that want to block the upgrade of their Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, can use the Group Policy or Registry to stop the automatic downloading of Windows 10 to the computer.
  2. Set the network connection to “Metered”. To set the network connection to metered you need to access the Settings app, click on Network and Internet, click on WiFi and select advanced options. Once in the advanced options move the slider to the ON position for Set as metered connection.

After the above choices Windows will want you to accept EULA. Just click on Decline and the upgrade will stop.
